Give full play to the advantages of independent innovation and shipping enterprises to be the strong backing for the “sailing” of self-owned brand cars

On March 1, the 62000-ton multi-purpose pulp ship “COSCO Maritime Development” belonging to COSCO Maritime Special Transport, a subsidiary of COSCO Shipping Group, which was loaded with 2511 domestic brands of fuel oil and new energy vehicles such as SAIC, JAC and Chery, was officially launched at the Jiangsu Taicang Port International Container Terminal.

This cruise will carry out the task of the China-Mediterranean liner route. It will use the “special framework for collapsible commodity vehicles” independently developed by COSCO Shipping to load multiple fuel and new energy vehicles of its own brands, transit through the Piraeus port in Greece, and go to Barcelona, Gioia tauro and Livorno. It is reported that the route is currently a monthly liner. In the future, the Red Sea port can be added according to customers’ needs, and the route service that radiates the Mediterranean and North Africa via Piraeus port in Greece can be provided.

Break the bottleneck of automobile export transportation

At present, China’s total vehicle export volume continues to rise, and the automobile export transportation encounters a “bottleneck”. In order to ensure the smooth supply chain of the automobile industry chain, the domestic shipping enterprises represented by COSCO Shipping Group, according to the needs of the automobile enterprises, create personalized and customized full-range automobile transportation supply chain services, and help the overseas development of China’s automobile industry. At the same time of using conventional automobile ships to transport exports, we have innovatively developed new models such as multi-purpose ship special frame transport commodity vehicles, container transport vehicles, etc. to serve China’s automobile export transportation.

In order to facilitate the smooth sailing of “China Auto”, COSCO Shipping, the largest special shipping company in the world under COSCO Shipping Group, pioneered a new maritime transport model of “frame transport commodity vehicle”. Since August 2022, COSCO Maritime Intelligence, the sister ship of COSCO Maritime Development, has carried out the first mission of “frame transport commodity vehicle”, the company has completed 30 “frame transport commodity vehicle” voyages, and has transported more than 32000 export commodity vehicles to East South America, West South America, Northwest Europe, Red Sea+Mediterranean, Africa and other regions through nearly 14000 special frames.

It is reported that this “foldable commodity vehicle special frame” is applicable to a wide range of ship types, can be stacked and loaded in the ship’s cargo hold, can make full use of the hold capacity and facilitate recycling; The lifting and unloading operation can be completed at the container terminal to avoid the restrictions of the ro-ro terminal and facilitate customers to flexibly select the loading and unloading port according to their own needs; At the same time, the whole logistics operation process is similar to that of professional automobile shipping, and is friendly to automobile manufacturers’ customers.

According to statistics, by the end of 2022, COSCO Maritime Special Transport has invested a total of 33 ships to carry out the task of “frame transport commodity vehicles”, including 18 62000-ton multi-purpose pulp ships, 11 38000-ton multi-purpose ships and 4 29000-ton multi-purpose ships. In 2023, the company is expected to complete the task of shipping 100000 commercial vehicles through frame transportation; It is estimated that by 2025, the company will invest about 60 ships to carry out the task of “frame transport commodity vehicles”, which can carry nearly 200000 commodity vehicles “to sea”.

Innovative cooperation between automobile enterprises and shipping enterprises to open up the whole chain of automobile export transportation

With the continuous enhancement of the innovation, growth, competitiveness and brand power of Chinese automobile in the global automobile market, the communication between Chinese automobile enterprises and overseas markets is more and more frequent, and the demand for safe and efficient cross-border transportation is also increasing.

In order to meet the needs of automobile enterprises, the innovative cooperation model of “automobile enterprises+shipping enterprises” is under way. It is understood that COSCO Shipping Group and SAIC, FAW, Dongfeng and other automobile enterprise groups have also strengthened cooperation in the export of container vehicles on the basis of long-term cooperation in the transportation of spare parts containers. According to the needs of automobile enterprises in the logistics management of the whole vehicle, the shipping enterprises have built a full-link service for the whole vehicle transportation based on the links of space, booking, customs, loading/unpacking of the whole vehicle, insurance, and dynamic tracking of goods throughout the transportation life cycle. At present, COSCO Shipping Group has set up a total of 26 complete vehicle loading and unloading points at its own container yard in Shanghai, Xiamen and Nansha holding container terminals in China, at Piraeus Port in Greece and Zebruch Port in Belgium in Europe, at its own container terminal in Abu Dhabi, the United Arab Emirates in the Middle East, and at other domestic and overseas company outlets, With the continuous expansion of global business needs of domestic automobile manufacturing enterprises and the global full-link service network.

Customized diversified transportation scheme “according to enterprise conditions”

It is understood that in order to meet the diversified transportation needs of different automobile enterprises, COSCO Shipping Group has created three automobile transportation modes based on full communication, discussion and cooperation with automobile enterprises.

The first is conventional ro-ro ship (auto ship). COSCO Shipping currently operates five self-owned goods ro-ro ships, which will carry 52000 Chinese cars exported by car ships in 2022. In order to strengthen the guarantee of automobile export capacity, COSCO plans to build 21 new 7000-8600 berth dual-fuel automobile ships by means of financing lease and self-construction.

The second is multi-purpose ship (special frame box). In order to meet the needs of the rapid development of the automobile export of automobile customers, in August 2022, China Ocean Shipping independently developed the “special framework for collapsible commodity vehicles”, which uses multi-purpose ships to load automobiles for export. From August to December 2022, 23000 vehicles will be exported by multi-purpose ships. At present, 15 62000 dwt multi-purpose pulp ships can be put into use, 5 of which are under construction, and more multi-purpose pulp ships are planned to be built. Each ship can carry nearly 3000 passenger cars through the “special frame for folding commodity vehicles”, which is equivalent to the traffic volume of a small and medium-sized professional automobile ship.

The third way is by sea container. In order to alleviate the difficulty that the Ro-Ro ship capacity cannot be significantly improved in the short term to solve the problem of vehicle enterprises’ shipment, COSCO began to use container ships to carry the whole vehicle export in July 2022, with 2-4 vehicles per 40-foot container. From July to December 2022, container ships will be used to transport 66000 vehicles for export. In 2023, China Ocean Shipping will continue to take advantage of its global service capabilities and global network advantages to provide automobile customers with end-to-end services from packing, customs declaration, shipping to destination.
